A: The most common special tool is a Fan Clutch Wrench Set. This set includes a large wrench to hold the water pump pulley nut and a thin wrench to loosen the large fan clutch nut (which often has reverse threads). Caution: The fan clutch nut is frequently reverse-threaded (righty-loosy, lefty-tighty)! Using the correct tools prevents damage to the water pump or other components.
Q: Is it normal for a fan clutch to start frequently when the AC is on at idle?
A: Yes—AC increases engine cooling load, so the clutch starts frequently to adjust fan speed. If it starts too often (e.g., multiple times per minute), the radiator may be clogged. Clean the radiator to reduce frequency.
