Q: How does a severe coolant leak potentially damage a fan clutch?
 A: Coolant leaking from the water pump's weep hole or a nearby hose can be sprayed directly onto the fan clutch assembly. This can have two detrimental effects: 1) The coolant can contaminate and degrade the silicone fluid inside the clutch, impairing its viscous properties and operation. 2) It can cause corrosion on the external bi-metallic spring, seizing it and preventing it from responding to temperature changes, rendering the clutch inoperative.
 Q: What is the acoustic difference between a good and a bad fan clutch during engine start-up?
 A: During a cold start, a good fan clutch will produce a brief, moderate roaring sound for a minute or two as the clutch is slightly stiff and the fan spins up. This sound should noticeably diminish or disappear entirely as the engine warms and the clutch disengages. A faulty clutch (stuck engaged) will produce a loud, consistent, and excessive roar from the moment of start-up that does not diminish with engine warm-up. A failed clutch (stuck disengaged) may produce no roar at all, even when cold.
 Q: Beyond overheating, what other operational issue can a slipping fan clutch cause?
 A: A clutch that is slipping excessively due to fluid loss may not only fail to provide cooling but can also lead to a noticeable loss of power and hesitation, particularly during acceleration from a stop or at low RPMs. This is because the slipping clutch itself creates a parasitic drag on the engine, consuming power without delivering the intended cooling effect, making the engine feel sluggish.
