Fan Clutch: The Temperature Control Assistant of Car Engines​
The fan clutch is a crucial component in the cooling system of a car engine. Its main function is to regulate the rotational speed of the fan, ensuring that the engine maintains an appropriate operating temperature.​
The common silicone oil fan clutch uses silicone oil to transfer torque. There is silicone oil stored in the oil storage chamber of the front cover, and the bimetallic strip temperature sensor on the front cover is the core. When the engine load is high and the coolant temperature exceeds the threshold, the bimetallic strip deforms due to heat and opens the oil inlet hole. The silicone oil flows into the working chamber, driving the fan to rotate at a high speed for heat dissipation. When the engine load decreases and the air flow temperature is lower than 35°C, the oil inlet hole closes, the silicone oil returns, the clutch disengages, and the fan idles, reducing energy consumption.​
Faults of the fan clutch are manifested as abnormal air volume, excessive water temperature, the fan not rotating or rotating slowly, etc. The reasons are mostly due to damage to the bimetallic temperature sensor, silicone oil leakage, fracture of the drive pin, etc. If oil stains are found on the fan blades, it is most likely silicone oil leakage, and professional maintenance is required.​
Although the fan clutch is small, it has a significant impact on the performance and lifespan of the engine. We should pay attention to its working condition in daily life.
